How Educated Are Students Who Attended American Public...

How adequately educated are students who attended American public schools? How much ethnic and cultural diversity is there in the American careers? Do wealthy middle and upper class children have an advantage to receive more opportunities than those who have a lower socioeconomic background? Millions of people built mistrust toward â€Å"American Dream† because they did not achieve what they were expecting in life. A lot of people want more money from their jobs or want to win the lottery for their materialistic needs. Instead of trying to be happy about what they have and cherishing everyday like it is their last. America is the land of opportunities so people from different countries come to fulfill their own dreams. Also, immigrants come to America just to live a better life and to not be discriminated because of their nationalities, ethic, beliefs, or cultures. But racism is the root of all evil in our country; the way Americans treat other races that is not the same as ou r own, they humiliate, and torment them. By doing people wrongful ways they have created the death of the American Dream because lots of people have lost faith or perhaps never really believed. Baroque Style of Period Free Essays

It’s easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself. -Johann Sebastian Bach Well, yes, it’s easy to play any musical instrument, but unfortunately for most, it IS hard finding the â€Å"right key’ and putting your finger, or mouth, or bow on the â€Å"right time† is almost impossible. But Bach always found the right time to play, and it wasn’t during the right second or on the right beat. We will write a custom essay sample on Baroque Style of Period or any similar topic only for you Order Now It was the right century. 600 officially began the Baroque period, and I mention Bach because it seems this period ended tit his death in 1750. Stay tuned (all puns intended) to learn what was going on, who else had the magic touch, and the characteristics of the Baroque time. Several events took place in the one hundred and fifty year span of the Baroque period. Presumably the most influential was that the Age of Enlightenment began. That meant you had an increased chance not to be killed for being different, which was great for entertainers trying to make a name for themselves. Great philosophers and writers flourished in this time, including Francis Bacon, Rene Descartes, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, John Milton, Jonathan Swift, William Shakespeare, and John Donned. All of which high school students are forced- ERM encouraged to read about. Science was also explored, and from it, gravity- the enemy of all women standing on a scale- was discovered. Sir Isaac Newton developed laws of physics, including the Laws of Motion and, as noted above, gravity. The first opera, Eurydice, and opera house, Theater San Casino, opened in 1600 and 1637, respectively. King James Version of the Bible, the most widely distributed version today, was published and reduced in 1611, and probably the greatest moment for you and me, the pilgrims landed here in America in 1620. Go Thanksgiving! So needless to say, none of the great composers of this time came from America, and consequently, have rather difficult names for the average American to pronounce. Such as Archangel Cornell, Claudio Monteverdi, Jean-Philippe Rammer, Alexandra and Domenici Scarlatti, and Heimlich Scouts (You should see how many red squiggly lines Word has up for those). There are less complicated ones, such as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederic Handel, Henry Purcell, and Antonio Vivaldi. Vivaldi†¦ I love Vivaldi; his works are outstanding and seem to fit every occasion. Most commercial companies have realized this as well, regrettably, and overuse his masterpiece, The Four Seasons. Some of the other more notable works were Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Bach, The Messiah by Handel, Marcher Royals by Lully, and Coracle’s trio sonatas such as Sonata for Violin and Lute. Speaking of trio sonatas, they were a popular form of the Baroque period, as were concertos, concerto grosses, suites (a set of instrumental compositions to be played in succession or a set of selected pieces from an opera or musical, arranged to be laded as one instrumental work), oratorios, cantatas, operas, fugues (a contrapuntal composition in which a short melody or phrase is introduced by one part and successively taken up by others and developed by interweaving the parts), and toccatas (a musical composition for a keyboard instrument designed to exhibit the performer’s touch and technique). While some of these forms may have been used in periods before them, the Baroque period definitively had its definitive characteristics that made it unique and created things that made it memorable. In general, the music was a bit like â€Å"how it feels to chew 5 gum†. Lying on a bed of vibrating metal balls, suspended from wires hit with a hammer, while shooting way up into the air all combined into one. The music had complicated rhythms and expansive movements; it was heavy and thick with texture, including singers and instruments in polyphonic heaven. Sounds were echoed and imitated, creating a very elaborate piece without any crescendos or diminuendos to make it dynamically different. It did have dependable meters though, usually two, three, four, or six main beats. In Just a century and a half, more than two dozen people made artistic history. The Baroque period was a great time of advancement in several areas, especially music. Numerous composers, such as Bach, Handel, Scouts, Vivaldi, Cornell, and Lully, and their work, like The Messiah, and The Four Seasons, survive to this day. The Baroque area has its own defining characteristics, such as complicated rhythms, elaborate melodies, pieces thick with harmony, and syrupy textures. It was also during a time of great change and many new discoveries, such as gravity, the first opera and opera house, and the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment. Hopefully this essay did some justice to the Baroque era. That’s all folks. How to cite Baroque Style of Period, Papers

Quality Management and Organizational Excellence †MyAssignmenthelp.co

Question: Discuss about the Quality Management and Organizational Excellence System. Answer: Introduction: Leadership is an art, which is developed within a personality by virtue of some external or inhibited effects, which dictates the proceedings towards the same. Some of the leadership theory in this context is very important to judge the included characteristics in the two given case studies. Behavioural theory is very helpful in analyzing the leadership characteristics because it states that leaders can be categorized based on their characteristics. Some of the identified leadership characteristics are Autocratic, Supportive, Transactional and Transformational (Miles 2012). The main purpose of this assignment is to understand the different kinds of leadership styles through the examples of two case studies. The Participative leadership styles are highly appreciated because of the fact that it is highly productive in both the business and the employee relation terms. Such kind of leaders make gutsy decisions when needed the most and never hesitate in coming closer to the employees as these leaders believe that motivated employees are a valuable asset for the organization. The leadership style this encourage its inhibitors for being self-motivated towards measurable risks for the betterment of organizational perspectives. Leaders of this kind do also believe in motivating employees also as they believe that employees are the biggest asset for an organization. Employees are even bigger and important the customers as satisfied employees would certainly make ways to the high quality customer service (Goetsch and Davis 2014). Few of the cited examples do very well support the fact that Branson is participative kinds of leaders. In the given case study, Branson does show that the CEO has high compassion towards the employee. Branson does believe that employees are the biggest asset for an organization, which is because of the fact that Branson often shares some moments with employees. The CEO never hesitates in motivating employees. The CEO is unique in some ways such as the person never set any bar for taking holidays. According to Branson, employees should have all the liabilities to avail their holidays based on their own requirement. This according to him is perhaps the best way to derive the productivity out of employees. The CEO also believes that employees are more valuable than customers are, as their satisfaction level would certainly encourage them for making customers satisfied (Durepos and Mills 2012). Terry Gou leadership style is more of transactional kinds, which only knows the production and nothing else apart from that. The leadership of such kinds never cares for any emotion whatsoever because productivity is the most important things for such leaders. The CEO of the Foxconn Company is very autocratic in leadership, which follows the making of strategies simply on its own credentials. It does not have any faiths on others. Such leaders do not care the emotional factors of employees. The CEO of the Company is completely opposite to that of Branson who believes motivating and satisfying the needs of employees. Terry does not care for any tolerance, which the employees are having. The CEO just cares for its style of leadership and the given deadline for the particular task (Turner 2014). The characteristics of such leaders are often not acceptable in most parts of the world; however, it is happening in Foxconn, which is majorly because of the pressure it receives from the Apple Company. The pressure is to maintain a fast manufacturing of bulk orders. This because of the fact that the CEO does not allow any sighs of relief to its employees. Most heartening, sometimes employees do need to work for the entire day; which is painful from the perspective of other countries. However, the leadership style is little justified if the pressure from the Apple Company is considered. However, even in that case, these employees are doing wonders for the Company. Nevertheless, some of the employees have also committed suicides. However, the CEO did not show any sign of worries. The CEO is maintaining the same style, which is best suited to its personality (Northouse 2012). Some of the examples do very well support the fact that Terry is transactional kinds of leader, which does not have any priorities for the values of employees. The CEO is very keen in instructing then high-end performance by giving their utmost dedication without caring for the personal needs. This is because of such reasons that few of the employees had even committed suicides because they were not able to tolerate the extra pressure. Instructing employees to work for 24 long hours is nothing but cruelty, which is testing the patience level of employees every time. The CEO is however bound to take such moves as it receives enormous pressures from the Apple Company for fast manufacturing of units. This is because of the fact that the CEO is offensive in nature and believes in taking every penny out of his employees. The cases of suicides had not made any affects whatsoever on its personality. Terry is entirely a different leader that Branson who respect his employees and believe in g iving them utmost supports to motivate their proceedings (Goleman, Boyatzi and McKee 2013). The path goal leadership theory doe support a leadership style, which is best suited the working environment or the employees requirement (Nahavandi 2016). Directive, Supportive, Achievement-oriented and Participative are the four kinds of leadership traits, which the theory describes. Directive leadership style is more oriented to the set goal, which does not deter from his or her goal. It carries on moving with unique strategies to justify the set goals. Supportive kinds of leadership styles encourage its inhibitors for providing utmost support to the project as well as to the employees. Employees are important for them as well as the organizational goals. Achievement-oriented is a kind of leader, which knows nothing but the target. These kinds of leaders are often found strict in behaviour with their employees as they have higher values to the given task. Participative is the one kind, which is widely admired by employees and the experts. This is because of the fact that these leaders do believe in motivating employees. According to such leaders, employees are the biggest asset for an organization, which needs to be motivated in orde r to have the best results outcome from them (Hargreaves and Fink 2012). For Richard Branson, Participative, Achievement-oriented and Supportive kinds of leadership styles are well justified. This is because of the fact that Branson strongly believes in making its employees motivated. This is one thing, which compels him for allowing the decision making on taking holidays to its employees. According to him, this is best for the high-end productivity. This explains the supportive kinds of leadership styles in Branson. The CEO is often known to take risks that are still calculated. The signing of an unknown progressive rock musician does simply reveals the decision-making skills in him. The decision eventually ended up fetching the highest number of selling in the history of music with the album Tubular Bells. This is one of his moves, which clearly indicates towards a fact that the leadership style of Branson does also inhibit the qualities of Achievement-oriented and Supportive. The CEO is supportive to the organization with its gutsy decision-making skil ls (Chhokar, Brodbeck and House 2013). Terrys leadership styles are the composition of both the Directive and the Achievement-oriented skills. This is very much evident in its style of leadership, which only knows the completion of the given project within the set deadlines. The cases of suicides do very well illustrate the fact that Terry was more targets oriented. The CEO has no compassion for the employees, which is a matter of sadness majorly (Chemers 2014). The leadership style of Branson is highly acknowledgeable from the perspectives organizational betterment. This is because of the fact that Branson has high values to its employees, which is very important to have production from them. A self-motivated employee can do wonder for the organization. This is perhaps the best way to take best out of employees. The leadership style of Branson can very well enhance the motivational level in employees. This can well be understood from the Motivation theory of expectancy, which supports a fact that employees are needed to be motivated in order to attain a highly incremented output from them. This is like motivating employees and expecting the desired outcomes. The leadership style has enabled the oddest things into maximum success. One of the examples of the success can be understood from the stupendous success of Tubular Bells. It was indeed a gutsy move from the CEO of the Company (Ciulla 2014). The leadership style of Terry finds fewer acknowledgements in some other parts of world. This is because of the fact that the leadership style of Terry is more a target oriented, which does not have any cares for employees pain and requirement. This is because of such reasons that some of the employees of the Company had also committed suicides. The leadership style of Terry is less motivating highly discouraging for the fighting spirit in employees. The motivation theory of expectancy does very well support the fact that leadership style of Terry is less acceptable across the globe. The theory of expectancy does encourage for motivating employees; however, Terry believes in making decisions and instructing strict orders for the employees. The given case study does indicate towards few of suicidal cases happened because of the strict leadership style of Terry (Hackman and Johnson 2013). The leadership style at Foxconn can well be improved to a fewer degree if it adopts the rewarding system and the highly incremented promotions of employees. This is because of the fact that the monetary benefits do excite the perspiration of high number of employees. If employees are getting high amount of salaries and along with that, they are also getting huge incentives and other extrinsic rewards, employees then well be guided towards a directional move. It is not only sufficient as the leaders himself is required to stepped down at the workplace sometimes for encouraging its employees and promising the highly incremented benefits. It is helpful in attaining the dedicational works from employees. Nevertheless, the nature should be polite and approachable; however, it should also focus highly on the set work targets (Northouse 2012). The approach is quite possible for some other parts of world; however, the Chinese are not very fascinated towards the mentioned changes. This is because of the fact that they believe in doing extensive hard works. They have examples of motivational kinds of leadership in front of them but still, they are more close to the directive and achievement-oriented kinds of leaderships. The work payment is high in China; however, they are not comfortable in taking some time out to motivate its employees. The autocratic leadership style is well prevalent in China, which encourages its leaders for strict works and hard rules for employees. They better knows their works only (Nahavandi 2016). The leadership style of Branson is supportive to the organizational betterment and for the betterment of employees. The leadership style of Branson is very productive for the organizational purposes. The leadership style of Terry is also available in some parts of world. They are also producing results but they are not ideal leaders. Employees work under such leaders because of only the monetary benefits and because of a fear to lose the job. Job switching is never possible at frequent rate. Introduction Some Time In The History Of The Universe, No One Is Quite

Introduction Some time in the history of the universe, no one is quite sure when, there was born a man. This man would eventually be the first to found a monotheistic religion. The name of this man is Zoroaster; the name is actually a corruption of Zarathushtra. Zoroaster's birth date, along with whether his religion is actually monotheistic, is a subject of great debate. The opinions concerning his birth, and consequently about the beginning of this great religion, range from as early as 6000 years before Plato to as late as 500 B.C.E. In any case he was born somewhere in Iran, although whether in the East or West is also arguable. In the early writings the people belonging to this religion are called Zarathustris; the system he taught is called Mazdaism. The present day followers are called Parsees. Zoroaster removed the multiplicity of deities from religion and created a faith in which there were two, or perhaps, one God. All other higher beings were regarded as demons, or evil spirits. No one knows for sure the different stages of popularity that Zoroastrianism experienced. We do know that at the time of Darius I, 558?-486 B.C.E., it was protected by royalty. Later, however, Zoroastrians were continually chased by the members of the Islamic religion through Kathiawar in India, and Surat, and finally they settled again in Bombay. The universe is the battleground. The opponents are Mazda Ahura, later to be known as Ahura Mazda, and Anra Mainyu, later call ed Ahriman. Ahura Mazda is the good force and the bad is Ahriman. The battle will last till Ahura Mazda defeats Ahriman in the year 12,000 (we are now presumably around 11,500). This is the world and its future in accordance with Zoroastrian beliefs. Zoroaster Zoroaster had a very non-conforming mind and was forced to flee his parents' house without his parents' consent because of the rebuking he gave to those who sacrificed catt le or drank intoxicating haoma. He fled to the mountains and gave himself to God. Sometime between the ages of thirty and forty an angel appeared to him and brought him to the throne of the highest God, Ahura Mazda. After this occurred, the prophet tried for twelve years to convert people, but to no available. During this period many visions were revaled to him. A milestone in the progression of the religion occurred when Zoroaster converted Vishtaspa, the king of Persia. He also converted the king's son, brother, counsellor, and grand vizier. Zoroaster married, along with two other women, the counsellor's daughter. Zoroaster was killed at the age of seventy-seven by Ardshataspa, a neighboring prince, who invaded Vishtaspa's capital. According to the Parsees, Vishtaspa is the father of Darius, who reigned from 521-485 B.C.E. Another view holds that Zoroaster lived 258 years before Alexander the Great; he would have therefore lived between 570 and 500 B.C.E . The Greeks tend to place him six thousand years before Plato. Ahura Mazda, while not necessarily discovered by Zoroaster, was found on an inscription dating around 714 B.C.E. In ancient Persia, before Zoraoster's reforms, religion was polytheistic. Zoroaster objected to these dieties and referred to them as demons. Many of the rituals and Gods that he removed were later reinstated due to the fact that the people were still emotionally attached to them. We can see this from the fact that on the epigraphs of Artaxerxes II Mnemon (404-358 B.C.E.) the Mithras and Anahita, ancient gods, are mentioned. Temples and images of God were also introduced into the religion at a later date. Zoroastrian Beliefs The Zoroastrian religion is based on the fundamental concept of a constant battle of good against evil. The good is represented by Ahura Mazda while the bad is represented by Ahriman. Ahura Mazda created this world as a trap for Ahriman. Human beings draw Ahriman into this world; he will jump at any chance to cause others to do evil. He will then be entering Ahura Mazda's world, and when people choose good over evil voluntarily this will weaken Ahriman to the point where he can be destroyed. It is hard to reconcile the two opposing views on the dieties in the Zoroastrian religion. The claim is made

Alias Grace essays

Alias Grace essays ALIAS GRACE BY MARGATET ATWOOD The book, Alias Grace, is the very first book I read in a long, long time. When I saw that it was 550 pages, I was thinking, How on earth will I ever be able to read this book in a month! It didnt really help me much reading the back cover and seeing that it was about a girl. Typical girly book I thought! However, the mention of a crime made me interested. I like the way that the author starts out the first chapter as the scene of the murder, and how every chapter in the books leads to this murder. The newspaper clippings were interesting too. I didnt know that this was a true story, so reading those excerpts made me more interested in the book. Margaret Atwood wrote the book in a style that anyone would be able to read, there wasnt any old English and the book was let me get to know the character better. The book changed in the narrative form, every so often throughout the book. When Grace is talking to Dr. Jordan, you get the first person experience, such as, Today Dr. Jordan looks more disarranged than usual, as if he has something on his mind; he does not seem to know quite how to begin. Then you get the third person narrative, It is kind of you to spare me the time says Simon. Each chapter has a title that is mentioned in the chapter, an example would be: Pandoras Box. You have no clue what it is about until you read the chapter. I liked that there were many characters involved in this story, you had the doctors mother who would write letters, Revered Viringerr who wanted to help Grace get out, and a cast of others. I think that this book has the perfect opportunity to be a blockbuster movie. I never knew what would happen next, there was suspense when Grace and James crossed over to the US and thought they were safe, until the police caught them. All over the world there are many chi...

A Proposal for Defense Against the War on Christmas

A Proposal for Defense Against the War on Christmas A Modest Proposal for Defense Against the War on Christmas Leah Abrams Across this great and beautiful nation, bombs are dropping. Swords are being raised, grenades are being launched, and battalions are being activated. What aim do our aggressors pursue? What is the flag flown in this frightful fight? The bloody battle being waged against hard-working Americans everywhere is the most outrageous and troubling issue facing our generation†¦ The War on Christmas. The War on Christmas is just the next scheme on the liberal agenda attempting to turn us all into atheist, sexually immoral deviants. However, in recent years, they have escalated this ambush on Christmas spirit to an unprecedented extreme. At this point, the forced removal of Christ from the holiday season is the most preposterous violation of liberty in this nation’s history. Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached a juncture at which the Christmas season lasts only from November 1st to December 25th. I know- despicable. The War on Christmas is a threat to Christians everywhere. PC-police and social justice warriors are attempting to bring about a world in which we say â€Å"happy holidays† instead of â€Å"merry christmas;† a world in which Starbucks cups are merely red and green for a few weeks- with no sign of Christ, a tree, or Santa Claus on the entire cup. Where is our love for religion? Where is our dedication to Christian values? Where is our deeply held belief in Santa Claus, Rudolph, and that little New Year’s Baby? Obama has even renamed the White House Christmas tree the â€Å"Holiday Tree.† Why must they target Christmas? I hold that Christmas remains the primary target of all grinches because it is objectively and undoubtedly the best holiday of all time. Our assailants know that they must defeat us by attempting to abait our Christmas cheer, by attempting to destroy our love of mistletoe, and by attempting to remove our favorite carols from malls across America. But we can withstand this injustice no longer. It is time to launch back with all of our effort, spirit, and stamina. It is time to muster all of our strength and defend the true Christmas spirit. For this reason, I’ve drawn up a modest proposal for a counterattack in the heart wrenching War on Christmas. I propose that we pass a national law mandating an extension of the Christmas season to 365 days per year. You heard me right, folks. I am proposing a year-round celebration of Christmas. Every mall in the United States will echo with Christmas carols 24/7, spurring on Christmas gift shopping. Every home will be decorated with a fragrant, beautiful pine tree in its living room. Santa Clauses will be set up on every corner, and ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas will become ABC Family’s 365 Days of Christmas. Even better, federal law will require a detailed depiction of the crucifix on each and every grande Starbucks cup. Tall cups will be decorated with a holly wreath, and ventis will display the three wisemen. I suppose that my heartless opponents will attempt to find flaws in my foolproof plan. They may argue that celebrating Christmas all year round diverts attention from lesser-known, less important holidays- that it’s unfair to people who celebrate things like Divalidan or Chanukwanzah. However, Christmas is simply a better holiday, and deserves more attention, joy, and frenzy surrounding it. I know that people of other religions will agree, and eventually, through the constant celebration of Christmas, they will come around to join us. Never fear, dear readers, I have nothing to gain from this proposal. In fact, I am far from having any sort of monetary or power-seeking motive in this endeavor, as I do not celebrate Christmas. The war on Christmas is an inherent violation of our God-given right to shove our religion down everyone else’s throats. Never again will someone tell me â€Å"happy holidays† or to enjoy my â€Å"winter break.† It’s time to take a stand in defense of the Christmas spirit. My fellow Americans, join me in defending your Christian morals. Join me in defending Santa, Rudolph, and Frosty. Join me in celebrating the best movies, songs, and sweaters of all time. Join me in saying â€Å"Merry Christmas-† all year.

Organizational development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Organizational development - Essay Example They are applied to understand the aforementioned elements (Armstrong, 2009). After using such strategic concepts, the following factors and their effects on Aldi are being discussed. Competitor Power Competitors may look to poach the employees of Aldi through head hunting. This is a very common threat faced by most of the organisations. You invest so much of money to train and develop an employee and suddenly he or she may be poached by one of your competitors leaving an organisational gap. In this case, the competitor might be offering more attractive compensation to the employees, therefore, making the employees to leave, especially if the company lacks enough finances to upgrade its employees’ compensation (Bamberger & Meshoulam, 2000). Economic Uncertainty Economic uncertainty may lead Aldi to freeze their recruitment temporarily or even release some of the existing employees, or it may lead them to cut short on some of the employee benefits leading to a state of organisa tional unrest. When this happens, the trained and skilled employees will lose their jobs in Aldi, leaving Aldi with few employees, therefore, a shortage of skills that previously were present occurs. This will be felt in the workload of the company, which will be demanding for the employees left behind to handle (Torrington, Hall & Taylor, 2011). However, this will be beyond the control of Aldi. Talent Shortage At some point of time the Aldi may come across a phase when demand is greater than supply, i.e. there is need for quality manpower but there is a lack of adequate supply. Talent shortage may be for senior executive position or for new comers (Bamberger & Meshoulam, 2000). This can become challenging to the organization, since more skills and talent will be required to address new demands in the market. This might lead to poor performance of the company. Industry-centric Some organizations are more affected by employee turnover than others. This is something they cannot contro l because of their nature and specialization. These kinds of organizations are those that deal with tourism, healthcare, food, and retail industries. Aldi, being a retail company therefore, puts it in a situation whereby most of its employees could leave. Most retail companies do not require employees who are highly skilled, like other professional careers. Therefore, this is Aldi’s nature, which is beyond the organization’s control. A good number of employees might leave Aldi, since there are many other retail companies, where they could get opportunities too. Additionally, employees working in jobs that require less or simple skills, such as retailing, are more likely to switch jobs (Armstrong, 2009). b) Aspects of Corporate and Human Resources Strategy Nowadays, it is widely believed that human resources of an organization is influential in the organization’s productivity levels. The human resources can as well be the source of an organization’s compet itive advantage over its competitors. This is achieved when the human resources has adopted effective policies for managing people, who are the employees, and these policies have been integrated with the culture of the organization, as well as the strategic business planning of the organization. With this, Aldi, as an organization, can also make use of different aspects of human resources and corporate strategy to enhance its organizational capacity. The human resour

International Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

International Management - Essay Example International Management The centrality of leadership is essential in managing a company or unit division holistically. Leadership styles are defined as those that provide motivation and direction in order to influence the approach and manner of influencing plans. To this end, leadership styles are classified as free reign, democratic or autocratic. By employing different leadership styles, individual productivity can be affected through his or her performance. A democratic leadership style employs inclusivity during the decision making process. However, it is paramount to note that the leader has the final decision pertaining to a cause of action. On the other hand, an autocratic leadership style is whereby the leader mandates responsibilities to employees without asking advice from followers or employees. A leadership style that employs free reign is whereby the leader mandates the decision making process to employees as well as delegating a number of activities and tasks for them to handle. It is pertinen t to note that it is commendable to employ the same leadership styles in all EU countries. Evidently, execution of leadership styles by team members leads to both negative and positive effects to the persons concerned. Positive leaders employ the use of rewards in motivating a person. These include using education and independence as motivational reward to the citizenry. On the other hand, leaders who are negative in approach are mostly domineering and superior in nature. The moral of worker and productivity is normally adversely affected by the wrongful use of negative leadership. To this end the EU countries consist of 27 states that are driven by economic and political motivation. Moreover, the member countries possess a myriad of norms and cultures that vary from region to region. Furthermore, the countries possess a variety of languages, religions, histories and systems of education. There equally exist divergent forms of leadership among the member countries. For example, Fren ch leaders are renowned for their autocratic style of leadership while Germans are well known or their assertive nature in leadership. Moreover, matters and issues pertaining to human rights human relations and rights are normally divergent from one country to the other. Consequently, a solution to such differences lies in the embracing of a similar leadership style among all EU countries. However, it is pertinent to evaluate whether a single style of leadership can be accepted and effectively satisfy all member states of the EU. To this end, the efficacy and success of a single type of leadership can only be achieved through proposals and appeal for acceptance rather than forcing it down on the member states. Moreover, in order to achieve flexible leadership type, all the European leaders need to appreciate and consider the context of these countries. The rapid rate of internationalization enhances the scope, size and types of organizations. Consequently, a rise in demand for day t o day comprehension of global businesses and cross cultural awareness. The benefit of singular leadership type is that it takes advantages of improves work and employee performance. Thus, it is paramount of EU leaders to be cross culturally, sensitive, adaptive and responsive when carrying out and delegating duties all ove national borders. The introduction of a unilateral leadership style also

Dupont Case Study Essay Example for Free

Dupont Case Study Essay Tom Harris is the General Manager of Dupont, which is the major employer in their community. Big changes had taken place when the Orlon plant had closed down, but few changes had taken place. Projects such as getting rid of one operation and installing another was being seen as regular business so there was no change management rubric. GM Harris went to the University of Virginia seeking advice from the academic community to bring some of the latest thinking in business to the Dupont plant. He specifically wanted to introduce his managers to new ideas and how to apply those ideas to improving to the plant. He stated he was not looking to improve overall organization effectiveness. He stated he was under increasing pressure to do more with less. A general bulletin was sent out to all employees stating the work culture that would be built. It stated that a representative from University of Virginia would be spending time at the plant and had been asked to give new perspectives on the work being done and the organization as whole. The hope was that it would help develop people and continually improve production. The most important goal was to help the staff appreciate and develop what goes right, assist in building on the strengths and to make the plant work better for everyone. It was also made clear that the representatives presense was not to suggest there was a particular problem, and the result is due to the plants desire to continuously improve. Over a six month time period interviews were conducted with workers and managers. Time was spent in the workplace and the representative learned about the day to day activities at the plant. This produced a description of the shared stock of knowledge that organizational members used to interpret events and generate behavior. What was made explicit with that process was the local widely used everyday common sense model performance unique to the plant and it’s atmosphere. A part of the culture that came out of this fact finding was that the local model of teamwork was organized around a southern stock-car racing metaphor. It was used to explain teamwork and the pattern for accomplishing it. Everyone knew the metaphor, so it was understood. The General Manager and the other managers were surprised to learn of the NASCAR metaphor, but it explained why they had not recognized existing teamwork in the workplace for they had different language used for teamwork. This metaphor gave them a language to introduce change for improvement. It also illuminated of the local meaning of effective supervision, high performance, and what constituted a good day at the plant with making improvements. Managers were instructed to use the findings of the study. It was felt the new understanding could be used to interpret the local meaning of effective work to capitalize on strengths, to expand and develop existing good practices. This would also help to problem solve. It was found too that the findings of the study could also be used as a basis for experiements. There existed a Leadership Core Team who were instructed to introduce change as an experiment. It was to be explained that it was to be tried and watched closely, and if after a designated time it was not working as planned, it can be stopped.

Censorship :: essays research papers

What Happened To Our Rights? Censorship in America today has gotten way out of hand. There always seems to be some holier than thou group speaking out as if they were representing the majority of Americans. These groups want to censor just about anything and everything we do. When it comes to watching television, reading a book or magazine, listening to music, or buying products, people should be able to make these decisions for themselves. Where do we draw the line with censorship? After all we are Americans and we do have rights. Although censorship is needed with issues concerning children, majority of censorship is an infringement of our rights because what one person may find offensive and obscene does not necessarily represent all people and adults should have the right to make their own choices. The word censorship probably would not exist today if all people agreed upon all things. This however is not possible for we are all unique individuals and have our own likes and dislikes. For instance, a person who enjoys pornographic material has the right to read or view this material if he or she enjoys this type of material. On the other hand people who feel pornographic material is obscene or offensive and do not care to partake in it do not have to view or read this type of material. This material is not being forced upon anyone. Why take away something a person enjoys if it is not hurting anyone else? What people do in the privacy of their own home is their own business. Who’s to say what a person likes or enjoys is wrong because another person does not agree. Playboy and Penthouse magazines are read and enjoyed by many Americans today; however, many people find these magazines offensive and obscene and others find these magazines to be an excellent source of reading f or sexual entertainment. Years ago people tried to ban this type of magazine, now these magazines are in great demand and are available on shelves all around the world. The big question is who is right and who is wrong? Neither, because people have their own opinions, likes, and dislikes. After all this is America and we the people have rights as stated in the first amendment of the constitution. Adults should have the freedom to make their own choices in their everyday life. Whether the person’s choices are good or bad is irrelevant.

Causes and Effects of Homelessness Essay

Homelessness is living without a home, be it on the streets or in shelters. There are many causes for people becoming homeless, and the combination of factors that lead to homelessness are different for every individual. Some of the factors that contribute to homelessness for youth, single adults, and families are poverty, domestic violence, substance abuse and mental illness, limited assistance services, and personal choice. The effects are also varied and can pertain to communities, businesses, other people and the homeless themselves. Some of the effects of homelessness are health, personal, families, abuse, and the society. Although there are many reasons why people become homeless, this paper will only include the top five causes. Poverty is the number one leading cause of people becoming homeless, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless. Poverty is best known as that state of being poor. When people lack income to meet all of their needs, they are forced to choose between housing, utilities, transportation, childcare, healthcare, and food. Nationally, homeless who have been surveyed by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, high proportions of homeless individuals were found to be employed. However, wages are often not sufficient to ensure housing stability and many people do not have jobs that provide living wages, health insurance, or high job security. Roughly half of homeless adults have incomes of less than $300 per month, (National Coalition for the Homeless). A lack of educational opportunities limits access to living-wage jobs and contributes to poverty. Another issue related to poverty is high cost and shortage of housing. It is difficult, if not impossible, for low-income individuals and families to find affordable housing. It’s no wonder with the limited scale of housing assistance programs, and other services of aid. With growing poverty levels and more people becoming homeless, public assistance services are unable to  keep up with the demand. Public assistance can be described as government aid (publicly funded) or privately funded agencies (churches, and/or other charities) to needy, aged, or disabled persons and to dependent children. Assistance programs do exist, but many have regulations and requirements that many people don’t qualify for. There are also the issues of waiting lists that might be as long as six months or a year. Shelters are available, but may have limited space and are only temporary (usually measured by weeks, some only lasting two weeks). Even with the programs out there, most don’t have adequate funding for prevention of homeless. Whether people are abused, mentally ill, or have disabilities, assistance is becoming more scarce and strict including health care necessities. While homeless people consist of mentally ill people and addicts, this only makes up a small portion of the entire homeless population. Mentally illness is foreseen as various psychiatric conditions, usually characterized by impairment of an individual’s normal cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning, and caused by physiological or psychosocial factors. Addicts consist of alcohol and drug users/abusers, which are considered of having habits of consuming either or both. According the U.S. Conference of Mayors (2005), about 16% of single adults are mentally ill homeless, and addicts make up less than this (addicts are more complex). It is difficult for either (mentally ill or addicts) to keep a job and often have trouble finding housing and treatment. Both, mentally ill and addicts, have a hard time finding services when living on the streets, thereby creating a cycle of homelessness and addiction from which it’s almost impossible to escape. Other homeless who need escape are the people of domestic violence. Domestic violence will consist of women and/or children whom are or have been physically, mentally, and/or emotionally abused (battered). Nationally, studies indicate that up to half of homeless women with children have experienced domestic violence, including children who are homeless. With specific shelters available for battered women, more women are fleeing their abusers, thus creating more homeless. Children, too, run away because of being battered and end up homeless. Children often encounter more abuse while on the streets to acquire food, shelter or clothing. Both, battered women and children are often forced with choosing between being abused or becoming homeless From interviews that I have conducted over the years,  there are still homeless people that just choose to become/stay homeless. I interviewed a homeless veteran back in 2009 whose name is Jim, and again in 2011. Jim informed me that he became homeless shortly after the Vietnam War because he chose to. He didn’t have family waiting for him, and had no desire of getting a job after serving his country. After being homeless for more than 15 years, he states that â€Å"it is easier†. He doesn’t have the hardships of paying bills such as rent, utilities, insurance, car fuel, and other bills. He also doesn’t have the responsibilities of caring for dependents, but living only for himself. Because of this advantage, he is able to survive on very little money. Jim says that â€Å"I focus on only the basics of food and hygiene†. With charities providing free food, soup kitchens, camping equipment, clothing and restroom facilities (including showers), Jim is able to survive without much begging. He claims that â€Å"being homeless gives me freedom† because he lives for the today and only planning for tomorrow. Though hard at times, simplicity can be blissful. Homelessness has a huge effect on an individual’s physical and emotional health. Homeless men and women suffer from colds that they cannot get rid of because they have no access to medicine. They suffer from vitamin deficiencies and often don’t get adequate sleep. Exposure to the elements and unsanitary living conditions can lead to frostbite, leg ulcers and upper respiratory infections. Serious illnesses like HIV/AIDS, diabetes and tuberculosis are more common in homeless people than amon g the general population. They also are more at risk for dependency on drugs and alcohol. Homeless individuals have no housing to protect them from physical violence and even rape. At the time when a homeless person realizes that he/she won’t have a roof to live under, it is hard for them to believe. It is this fact of not dealing with reality that makes homeless people less able to take actions, but they suffer psychologically as a result. Being without a home takes a terrible toll on children as well. Homeless children have higher rates of ear infections, stomach problems and asthma than other children their age. These children are also more likely to be depressed, anxious, or withdrawn, and have more difficulty in school than their peers. Homelessness tears families apart because some shelters won’t take boys and others won’t accept children. A mother may have to watch helplessly as her children are taken from her and placed with relatives or in foster care,  which highly affects the children. These can lead to emotional breakdowns that lead them to become institutionalized or they can begin to develop behavioral problems that land them in front of a judge. There is also the economic impact that homelessness has on society. Operating and maintaining homeless support services programs are costly ventures. The funding for these programs comes in the form of taxpayer dollars and private donations. Yet, most of these programs are generally unfunded, which means that only the most basic of services can be offered. This in turn means that many homeless are forced to seek alternate methods of getting their basic needs met. Subsequently, those homeless who cannot find employment will turn to recycling or panhandling as a means of putting money in their pockets. As the numbers of homeless who dig through garbage cans and dumpsters in search of recyclable items and as the number of homeless who panhandle increases there are the inevitable complaints to the community’s governm ent to do something about the homeless. This usually causes the city to adopt stricter laws concerning – and in some instances, prohibiting – these activities. Then, because of the need to enforce these ordinances, local law enforcement must be on the look-out for violators. For those homeless who are caught, the officer must then take the time to stop, check the person’s ID, and write the person a ticket. Which costs more money, because then it has to go through the local court system. Paperwork has to be filled out, court appearances must be set, and for those homeless who either don’t pay the fine or show up in court, additional paper work is created. If a warrant is issued, then the next time the person is caught, there is a possibility that they will be given a trip to the local jail – at taxpayer’s expense, of course – which means more paperwork. There is also an environmental impact that homelessness has on a society. Since most communities do not have anywhere near the amount of supportive resources needed for the numbers of homeless in their areas, the homeless will be forced to find alternate places to live and sleep. In more urbanized areas, this could be in the doorways of businesses after closing hours, behind buildings, public benches, bus shelters, building hallways and the like. In other, less urbanized communities, the homeless may seek shelter in â€Å"green belt† areas. Since every person has a need to heed the call of nature, and because many businesses deny the homeless the use of bathroom facilities,  the homeless are forced to use whatever convenient location they may find to tend to those needs. The cost of clean-up, once again comes out of taxpayer dollars. Since the 1940’s, the issue of homelessness has remained a growing concern within the U.S. Factors contributing to the problems are varied and deep-set within the make-up of our economy, and affect the economy as a whole. Not all homeless people chose to live in the streets or shelters. If a person believes this, then their perceptions are ignorant and unaware. Whatever the causes of an individual’s homeless, the consequences can be brutal. There is no one cause of homelessness and as a result there is no one solution. The solutions needed to eliminate homelessness are the same ones needed to prevent its occurrence. An understanding of the population and the causes of homelessness provides the background necessary to begin developing a strategy to end homelessness. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY About the Homeless: Snapshot of homelessness. National Alliance to End Homelessness, 2011. Web. 2011 October 3.  www.endhomelessness.org/section/about_homelessness/snapshot_of_homelessness On this web page, I accessed several inner links to gain additional information for more specifications. The National Alliance to End Homelessness gives lots of details pertaining to homelessness. There are statistics, characteristics and reasons of homelessness. This site focuses on educating people about homeless and offers homeless people resources. It gives common geographical areas of homeless, the types of people who are homeless, how often people become homeless and the reoccurrences. The National Alliance to End Homelessness is a non-profit organization committed to preventing and ending homelessness with updated and current information. This source helps emphasize the causes of my paper’s main topic, and reinforces the effects of homelessness based on facts. Jim. Personal interview. May 2009. Jim was a homeless veteran at the time of interview and has been homeless for more than 15 years. He was actually part of a â€Å"camp† community, consisting of seven other homeless people. I talked with several of them, but he is the one with the most to say. This interview is about some people choosing  to be homeless for no particular reason, other than it being easier. Jim talked about when he became homeless shortly after the Vietnam War. He hadn’t had family before the war, and didn’t have anyone/anywhere to turn to afterward. Society didn’t offer much support and government didn’t offer any help. So he became homeless. Now, it’s his way of life and he has no desire to change it. He has adapted to being homeless and finds that it’s easier (the others agreeing that it’s an easier way of life). Jim is still homeless as of August 2011, when I ran into him this summer. He mentioned that as a veteran and Obama’s help with veteran services, he now receives some assistance (food, cash, and METRO bus tickets for transportation). Even with new veteran’s laws passed to help homeless veterans, he remains homeless and claims to be too old to go back to work. This information supports my theory on some people choosing to be and stay homeless. USHUD 2010 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress: SUMMARY OF KEY FINDINGS and STATISTICS. Web.  2011 October 1. www.nationalhomeless.org/factsheets/why.html The National Coalition for the Homeless gives statistics and information about homeless people. Both web sites talk about what types of people become homeless and reasons why they become homeless. The main reasons described in detail pertain to poverty and housing statistics, but also give some examples of other factors. Information also includes characteristics of homeless persons. The information provided is factual and is as accurate as can be expected (homelessness cannot be known precisely). The National Coalition for the Homeless is a national network that is working toward ending homelessness with current and updated information. The organization consists of many services that all fight for the rights’ of homeless people and report to congress. These sources give factual information about the causes and effects of homeless people, and support the topic of my paper.

Succubus Revealed Chapter 22

Flying from Seattle to San Francisco is easy, easier even than going to Las Vegas. It takes less than two hours, and tons of flights run each day. The whole trip should've been simple. I mean, there were days when I'd spent more time in traffic just trying to get from downtown Seattle to the suburbs. But I'd never flown on an airplane as a mortal. I was still determined to get to Seth, so there was no question that I was going to make this flight – only a lot of fear. I sat on the plane, waiting for takeoff, noticing things I'd never paid much attention to before. Were the engines usually that loud? Was that fuel I smelled? Was that a crack in the window, and if so, would the whole thing hold when we were airborne? I'd never done much more than politely watch the flight attendants' safety demo, but this time, I hung on to every detail. I had a lot on the line now – like, my life. An immortal could survive a plane crash. It wouldn't be pretty, but it was possible. Now? Now I faced all the risks the rest of the human world did. My fears were unfounded, of course. The flight was smooth and easy, just as fast as I'd expected. Flying really was the safest form of travel. That hadn't changed. Only my perceptions of the world had. I made the trip white-knuckled and breathed a deep sigh of relief when the plane landed. By the time I'd rented a car and was settled into my hotel room, I still had a couple hours before Seth's signing. My hotel was only a couple of blocks from his store – I'd planned it that way – and there was little for me to do except wait. Wait and obsess. A lot of that time was spent agonizing over my appearance. Even when I could shape-shift, I'd always prided myself on my ability to do my own styling. Of course, when Jerome had been summoned and I'd lost my succubus powers briefly, I'd discovered that I really wasn't quite as adept as I'd believed. I'd been cheating without realizing it all along, making small corrections with my powers. Stripped of them, I'd found all the little details I'd missed with blending eye shadow, straightening my hair, and myriad other grooming tasks. Now was no different. I would never have that guaranteed perfection again. There would always be flaws in my appearance. I was going to start aging. How long until that set in? Staring at myself in the hotel bathroom's mirror, I searched out all the little things I thought could be improved upon and then tried to fix them. When I was finished, I was so frustrated that I didn't know if I'd come close to my previous perfection or not. The only thing I was fairly certain of was that it probably didn't matter. Seth's decision to forgive me wasn't going to have anything to do with how my bangs fell or if my makeup brought out the gold flecks in my green eyes. I showed up ten minutes before Seth's event started, thought it was obvious people had been arriving for some time. A bit of nostalgia for Emerald City hit me as I gazed around and took in the efficient bookstore staff as they worked to accommodate the crowd. A podium had been set up in front of a large seating area, though no chairs were left empty. Staff shifted what furniture they could to improve the view for those of us who were standing, and I had to stop myself from offering to help. I ended up purposely staying near the back of the standing crowd. I could still see the podium and hoped my spot would keep me semiobscured. All around me, excited readers clutched copies of Seth's books, some even carrying huge stacks. Their excitement was electric, and I found myself getting caught up in it when Seth finally emerged to thunderous applause. My heart leaped. How long had it been since we'd last spoken? A week? It felt like an eternity, maybe because I'd pretty much lived one in the trial. He was wearing a Brady Bunch T-shirt, and though it looked like he'd brushed his hair, I could already see parts of it starting to go unruly in that way it had. He didn't appear to have shaved in a couple days, but the scruff looked adorable and added to his carefree writer appearance. I felt a smile spreading on my face as I watched him and was reminded of the first time we'd met, when he'd come to Emerald City for a signing and I hadn't recognized him. â€Å"Hey, everybody,† he said into the microphone, once the applause had quieted. â€Å"Thanks for coming out tonight.† Thinking about that first meeting with him also made me realize how much he had changed in the last year and a half. He would never be entirely comfortable in front of a crowd like this – especially since they kept getting bigger – but he was certainly more at ease than that first meeting. He grinned at their enthusiasm and made eye contact where he could, something he'd had trouble with in the past. There was confidence even in the way he stood and spoke. It made me love him that much more, something I hadn't believed possible. Sometimes he would open by reading aloud from the new book, but this time, he jumped straight into questions. Hands went up everywhere, and I found myself ducking against a shelf as he scanned the audience and called on people. I wasn't quite ready for discovery yet. I just wanted to watch him and drink him in. I was amused that the very first question he was asked was, â€Å"Where do you get your ideas from?† That had been a joke between us, at that first meeting, because it was one of the most common questions he received. I'd commented, back then, that it must get tedious answering the same things, and Seth had told me no. He'd said that the question was always new for the person asking and that he treated it as such. It didn't matter how many times it came up. He took joy in their excitement for the books. More questions came, both broad and specific, and Seth answered them all with friendliness and good humor that his fans loved. A lot of people especially wanted to know about the next book, the last book in his Cady and O'Neill series. My heart grew and grew the more I watched him, and I felt like I was getting away with something by being able to observe him without his knowledge. Our last few encounters hadn't exactly been friendly, and it was a balm to me to observe all the warmth and kindness that had made me fall in love with him. It went by too quickly. I was so caught up in watching and listening to him that I was barely aware of the time flying by. It wasn't until I picked up on the subtle movements of the staff that it hit me that this portion of the event was about to wrap up. They would go into signing soon, and the crowd around me would become a massive line that would take hours to get through. Then what? I was suddenly at a loss. Why had I come here? To see Seth . . . and then? I wasn't sure what. I hadn't had much of a plan, short of the preparations needed to get here. Somehow, I had been thinking that would be enough, but of course it wouldn't be. If I wanted to do something, I had to do it now, before this turned into the machine of signing. My hand went up, and inexplicably, Seth's eyes went instantly to me. I don't know how it happened. Like me, others had realized their chance to ask questions was running out, and eager hands were up everywhere, some waving eagerly in the hopes that they might draw his attention. How I – standing in the back and shorter than most of those around me – pulled it off was a mystery. Maybe it was like the time Erik had used Seth to rescue me from the Oneroi. Maybe after everything that had happened, we were still bound. Seth's eyes widened when he realized it was me, but his hand was already pointing in my direction, giving me permission to speak. He faltered only a little. â€Å"Y-yes?† I felt like the eyes of the world were on me. The eyes of the universe, even. So much rested on the next words out of my mouth. â€Å"Are Cady and O'Neill ever going to get together?† I don't know where it came from. When Seth and I had first met, this was the other common question he and I had discussed, and I had mocked it as well. Surprisingly, no one had asked it tonight, but judging from the intense way everyone turned to Seth, you could tell it was on a lot of people's minds. Those amber brown eyes weighed me heavily, and then he answered my question with a question. â€Å"Do you think they should?† â€Å"Well,† I said, â€Å"they've been through an awful lot together. And if there's only one book left, it kind of seems like they're running out of time.† The ghost of a smile flickered over his lips. â€Å"I suppose you're right.† He thought about it a heartbeat more. â€Å"I don't know if they will. I guess you'll just have to read the next installment.† That was met with disappointed groans, and the bookstore staff used that as an opening to segue into signing and hurry Seth off to a more comfortable table. He watched me a few moments more before he moved, the faint smile still on his face. He looked thoughtful. Meanwhile, my heart was beating in double time. In a daze, I allowed myself to be herded with the others into line, not caring how far back I was. Some of the aches in my ribs and the rest of my body began to nag me, but I forced myself to stay strong and ignore them. It took an hour and a half for me to reach the front, but much like the questions, I barely noticed the passage of time. Only, now it wasn't because I was so enraptured by what I saw. This time, I was simply terrified. I wanted to see Seth . . . but was afraid to. He finished signing for the person in front of me and gave me the same smile he'd had on for everyone else. I supposed he'd had time to prepare himself for me coming through the line and was able to effectively hide his shock at my presence. â€Å"Hi,† he said. I handed him my book without a word. â€Å"You've come a long ways.† â€Å"I'm a pretty big fan,† I said. He smiled and scrawled one of his stock phrases into the book: Thanks for reading! When he finished signing, he gave the book back to me, and I gave him an envelope in return. â€Å"This is for you,† I said. There was nothing that weird about my action. People often gave him gifts and letters. In fact, I could see a small pile of goods sitting on a chair beside him. He accepted them with good grace all the time, but then, they weren't usually from people who had the kind of history we did. He held the envelope for a moment, and I suddenly worried he wasn't going to take it. Then, he set it down and said, â€Å"Thank you.† It went next to him on the table, not on the chair. Unsure what to do now, I murmured my own thanks and then hurried off to let everyone else have their chance with him. Mine was gone. I'd played my cards and wouldn't know for a while if anything would come of it. The envelope had had a number scrawled on one side, and inside was a key to my hotel room. It was a silly, cliched thing to do, but I knew how these types of events worked. If I'd openly asked Seth to meet me somewhere, I would have likely gotten the unwanted attention of the bookstore staff and their security. I knew because I'd hurried a fair number of zealous fans off after book signings myself. At least back in the hotel room, I was able to sit down. I didn't realize until that moment just how much I'd been asking of my battered body to stand for that long. Hugh had been right about one thing: being mortal changed everything. I couldn't shrug off getting hit by a car now the same way I could have as a succubus. My doctor had given me a prescription for Vicodin, but I was pretty sure I didn't want to be strung out on drugs for my grand reunion with Seth. I settled for ibuprofen and began the agonizing process of waiting. I'd actually dozed off when I heard the room's door click open. I sprang up from the bed, only getting half a glance at myself in the mirror before I moved toward the door. Seth entered, freezing when he saw me. The door swung shut behind him, and I too came screeching to a halt, too stunned to move. Part of it was that same wonder and rapture of seeing him, just as it had been in the bookstore. Only, now he was right here, alone in the same room with me. It was almost too much to handle. The rest of my inability to react came from simply forgetting what I'd wanted to say. I'd rehearsed a hundred speeches and apologies earlier, and all of them abandoned me now. I fumbled for something – anything – to say that would fix all of the hurt between us. â€Å"Seth – â€Å" I never got another word out. In the space of that breath, he crossed the distance between us and wrapped his arms around me, nearly lifting me off the ground in a giant hug. â€Å"Thetis,† he breathed against my neck. â€Å"Ow,† I squeaked. He instantly set me down and opened his arms, staring curiously. â€Å"The car? But it's been . . .† Curiosity changed to wonder. â€Å"It's true, isn't it? You're really . . .† â€Å". . . human,† I supplied, catching hold of his hand. Even if that hug had been quite the test of my ribs, I hated to lose all contact with him. After the chasm that had stretched between us recently, even that small touch of his fingers was like magic to me. Seth nodded wonderingly, drinking me in. â€Å"They told me . . . they tried to explain it. I understood, but somehow I just couldn't . . . I just couldn't wrap my mind around it. I'm still not sure I can. You look the same.† â€Å"I got to keep the same body,† I said. â€Å"Parting gift.† â€Å"Yeah, but it's just as perfect . . . just as beautiful. I don't know. I thought as a human you'd look . . . ordinary.† â€Å"Stop,† I said, feeling flustered. I ran a nervous hand over my hair. This conversation wasn't going how I expected. â€Å"I probably have bedhead.† My makeup had probably smudged while I slept too. He grabbed my other hand and – gently – drew me near. â€Å"You look perfect.† I shook my head, still needing to summon one of my wellprepared speeches. â€Å"Seth, I'm so sorry. Sorry for everything that I – â€Å" â€Å"Shh,† he murmured. â€Å"Thetis. Georgina. Letha. It's all right. You have nothing to apologize for.† Now I stared in wonder. â€Å"I have everything to apologize for. What I did to you – â€Å" † – was a lifetime ago,† he said. â€Å"But it was still me,† I argued. â€Å"Still this life.† â€Å"What, and you can't be forgiven for that? For something you did when you were still in your teens?† I wasn't sure how I'd switched from apologizing to trying to condemn myself, but there I was, doing it anyway. â€Å"We were still married. Or, well, I mean . . . I was to him. I broke my vows. It was wrong.† â€Å"And I was wrong – or he was wrong, whatever – to have been so oblivious to how you were feeling. We were both at fault, Georgina. We both screwed up – many times.† Seth released my hands and gently cupped my face in his. â€Å"And I daresay we've paid for it a hundred times over. How long do we have to be punished? Are we beyond forgiveness?† I had to look away then, for fear of tears forming in my eyes. Last year, not long after I'd met Seth, I'd discussed some of these same things with Carter. He'd told me that no one – not even a succubus – was beyond forgiveness and redemption. â€Å"But what you said . . . I hurt you so much. . . .† Seth sighed. â€Å"I know. And I'm sorry. It was all such a shock, the hypnosis . . . I still remember it all, but it's taken on kind of a dreamlike quality now. Like it's something I saw on TV rather than something I experienced. It was all a long time ago, and we've both changed. I was coming to you that night at the bowling alley to talk about it. I was still confused but knew enough to realize I'd acted rashly. Then, when you were hurt, and they told me you could actually die . . .† He trailed off, and I dared a look upward. â€Å"Oh, no. Please don't tell me that this is one of those situations where it took a near-death experience to realize how you felt about me.† â€Å"No,† he said, with one of those small, amused smiles I loved. â€Å"I knew long before that. The injuries of the past will always be a part of me, but I've grown from them – just like you have. You're the same as you've always been . . . and yet you're not. You faced me, even though you wanted to run away. You kept trying to help my family, even when I was telling you to go away. We've both changed . . . both taken the best we could of the bad. I just didn't see it right away.† He sighed. â€Å"Like I said, it was the reason I came that night. Seeing you hurt only drove home what a fool I was. And then when Carter told me what happened . . .† Those warm brown eyes searched my face. â€Å"Is it true? You had a clean getaway and risked it all for me?† I swallowed. â€Å"It wouldn't have been a clean getaway without you.† Seth tipped my head back and kissed me, his lips warm and soft. The sensation swept my body, love and desire both threatening to overwhelm me. There was no more succubus feeding, no more peering into his soul. I no longer knew his thoughts, and I didn't need to. I knew my own, knew that I loved him. And I also suddenly knew with certainty, in that same way all humans deduce such things without that benefit of succubus powers, that he loved me too. â€Å"Is it that easy?† I whispered, when we finally broke apart. â€Å"Kiss and make up?† â€Å"It's as easy as we choose to make it,† he murmured, pressing his forehead to mine. â€Å"At least, this decision is. Nothing's truly easy, Georgina. Love and life . . . they're wonderful, but they're hard. We may mess up again. We have to be strong and decide if we can still go forward, even when things aren't perfect.† â€Å"How'd someone so young get so wise?† I asked. He brushed a lock of hair from my face. â€Å"I learned from this woman who knows a lot about love.† I scoffed. â€Å"Hardly. I think I'm still learning more about it every day.† Seth's lips found mine again, and I forgot my worries for a moment, simply losing myself in him. With as ardent as he'd been earlier, I was kind of surprised when he was the one who stopped the next kiss. â€Å"Easy there,† he said, with a small laugh. â€Å"You feel too good. We don't want to get too carried away.† â€Å"Don't we?† I asked. â€Å"I mean, I gave you my room key, and you went right for me as soon as you came in.† â€Å"Well, yeah,† he agreed, â€Å"but that was before I remembered you were hit by a car a week ago.† I tightened my arms around him and drew him toward the bed. â€Å"I'm still alive, aren't I?† â€Å"Yes,† he admitted, letting himself be drawn along. â€Å"But are you sure you don't want to just wait?† Hugh had said something after booking my flight. Everything changes when you're mortal. You don't know what tomorrow will bring. â€Å"I've waited long enough,† I told Seth, just before kissing him. And that was the moment I knew what it was like to have my soul back. It sounds kind of sappy, I know. But to be able to kiss someone you love when you're fully and completely in control of yourself and know who you are . . . it's exquisite. How we love others is affected by how we love ourselves, and for the first time in a long time, I was whole. I knew who I was and in turn was able to appreciate just how much I loved him. And of course, the whole experience was affected by the fact that I no longer had succubus powers to contend with. I didn't have to worry about stealing his life energy. I didn't have to wrestle with the guilt. I didn't have to split the desires of my heart with my predatory supernatural nature. All I had to do was touch him and exalt in the experience of being together. We fell onto the bed, having a care for my still-bruised body. Strangely, I'd also been recovering from injuries the first time Seth and I had made love. Then too, we'd had to balance our passion with caution. It hadn't been difficult then, and it wasn't difficult now. We peeled each other's clothes away, tossing them into a careless heap on the floor. When Seth saw the bandages around my torso, he gently kissed all around them, his lips softly grazing my hips and breasts. Through some unspoken understanding, I rolled him onto his back so that I could lower myself onto him. I positioned my hips over his, resting my hands on his chest, and slowly brought him into me. We both cried out, from pleasure and also the sheer rightness of being together. He fit like he'd been made for me, and I suddenly wondered if I should have been so quick to always scoff about divine plans. Because surely, if ever there was something that seemed to have been guided by a higher power, it was the crazy path of our relationship . . . one that always kept bringing us back together. Over and over I rode him, overwhelmed almost as much by the way his gaze held mine as I was by the heat spreading through my body. I wanted to stop, to freeze that moment in time, but my human flesh and its desires eventually won out. I increased my pace, taking him harder and deeper until I crossed the edge and could handle no more. Ecstasy shook my body as I came, and a joy so intense I nearly forgot my surroundings flooded me. There was no succubus satisfaction here, only the simple bliss of taking pleasure in the one I loved. Seth came soon after, the look on his face causing me joy of another sort. There was such an easy, unguarded happiness in it, mingled with all his love for me. He hid nothing. It was all there on display, his affection and his bliss. Afterward, we lay in each other's arms, both of us floating in our own emotions as we basked in the experience we'd just had. I could hear Seth's heart beating as I rested against him and was aware of the pounding of my own heart – my mortal, human heart – as well. This was what it was like to truly be alive. â€Å"I'm almost afraid to move or speak,† he said at last. â€Å"Part of me is certain this must be a dream or a spell. I'm afraid I'll ruin it.† â€Å"It's neither,† I said. Then, I reconsidered. â€Å"Well, it might be a dream.† Nyx had taunted me for a long time with her dream-vision, refusing to tell me who the man in it was. When Seth had finally been revealed, I'd been certain she'd lied to me. I hadn't seen how any of that future could become a reality, and yet . . . here I was. â€Å"A dream, huh?† asked Seth. â€Å"Does that mean I'm going to wake up to cold reality soon?† â€Å"No,† I said, snuggling closer. â€Å"Because our dream's come true. The only thing you're going to wake up to from now on is me. For as long as you want me.† â€Å"I want you forever. Is that too long?† I smiled. â€Å"After what we've seen? I'm not sure it's long enough.†

buy custom Ritalin for Whom essay

buy custom Ritalin for Whom essay Ritalin is a drug for individuals with a disorder or a deficit called Attention Deficit-hyperactivity disorder. (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). The drug has been found to be helpful in treating the above said conditions; however, every drug can be abused depending on the availability and perceived other conditions it can treat. Therefore, all the stakeholders starting from parents, teachers, counselors and other people who might handle the drug should know the facts about it, the safe and unsafe use of the drug Ritalin. Its therapeutic and non-therapeutic nature. The paper therefore, focus on the nature of the drug, who should it be administered to and what are the effects of the drug to people of different ages. Ritalin is a drug that has flooded many American families, and now it is found elsewhere in the world. It is often used to reduce the patients anxieties, conflicts and exasperations at different times in their lives. The paper therefore, looks at the long- term s ide effects of the drug and its usefulness in the therapeutic purposes. Discussion. The use of the drug combined with other forms of therapy such as behavioral therapy, individual psychotherapy for children and adults and the people in their families. The combination of pharmacological and psychological therapies is useful foe the treatment of children and adults psychiatric disorders. The disconcerting and worrying factor in the use of the drug, its diagnostic and lack of knowledge is a worrying trend. There is still lack of knowledge and the clarity of ADHD and the side effects of the Ritalin, but the drug is always prescribed to children below the age of 6. Attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity have been around for a very long period of time. A study that was done by Eric Taylor in 1991 advocated for the clinical distinction of the lot of children with the presence of hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder from the group with antisocial conducts and behaviors and hyperactivity. Hyperkinesis is a disorder caused by the structural damage of the brain or psycho-social problems, and when is combined with co-morbidity many of the symptoms found in the ADHD, this can explain why the ADHD is over diagnosed leading to other disorders. Despite all the studies done on the investigations. Research, and elaborate diagnostic criteria, differences in culture and history in thinking about the behaviors still disturbs the range of therapeutic initiatives to contain ADHD. ADHD is still a debatable disorder whose nature regarding the etiology, prevalence, diagnostic and conceptualization not clearly defined. With regard to the twin studies of the ADHD and its etiology indicating the genetic component of hyperactivity has revealed that the genetic component of the disorder still not known and what is exactly inherited. Another disconcerting fact about ADHD and Ritalin is that the drug is not licensed for young children, yet it is administered to an increasing number of children below age 6. This poses one question as to who should Ritalin be administered to? For pre-shooters only or for all the people who may be suffering from the ADHD disorder! Procedure of the study A random sampling of the students attending large universities in the southwestern universities, in the United States, was invited for the study. They participated in the internet based research in order to establish college achievement, lifestyle and alcohol and drug abuse and drug behavior. The participants could link directly to study in the internet through the link that was provided for the study. The link contained the instructions and the special pin number for the students registration so that each respondent could only participate in the surrey once. The survey was open for all the participants for three weeks. The participants were provided with the consent pad with the information that required them to consent for the study for ethical reasons. Following the consent form, participants completed a series of demographic and college regulated items like sorority and fraternity measures as well as questions regarding the alcohol use, illegal and prescription of the drug, ciga rette use. The measures of the study were approved by the San Diego State University Institutional Review Board. A total of 6,150 undergraduate students participated in the survey and approximately 32% completed the survey. The analysis and the survey focused on the Ritalin use among the typical college students between the ages of 18 and 24. The demographic items included questions about respondents gender, age, race, committed relationship, religious service attendance in days, months, years eat, GPA for the previous semester, type of residence, alcohol consumption in terms of the frequency of drinking, how many bottles per day, per week and per month. The survey also queried he participants smoking status as in never smoked, experimented, current smokers. Additional survey was on the use of illegal drugs like marijuana, cocaine and the use of prescription drugs like Ritalin. The participants were asked as in how many occasions in their lives have they use Ritalin without prescription for the last twelve months, for the past thirty days, and they were allowed to select frequencies like never used, used it occasionally, used it frequently, used it more occasionally etc. Data analysis The bivariate relationship between the Ritalin use and the participant demographics, college related variables, cigarette use, alcohol use and illegal and prescription use of drugs. Past year and past thirty days use of the Ritalin without the prescription served as the dependent variables for the analysis. The respondents who reported the use of one or more illegal substances or one or more prescription drugs in the past one year or in the past thirty days were recorded as having used one or more substances. Variables with the significant bivariate relationship to Ritalin use were included in the logistic regression analyses distinctively to model the past one year and the past thirty days use of the illegal drugs and the subscription drugs. Cases with missing data were deleted from the multivariate analyses list wise. Bivariate and the multivariate analyses were weighted to account for the overrepresentation of any gender since out of the sample study subjects female gender was ov errepresented. Results The bivariate associations between past year and past thirty days Ritalin use and the participants demographics, college related differences, cigarette use, alcohol use and drug use showed great and significant correlation with the participants age, last semester GPA, drinking occasionally and 9in the maximum number of drinks in the past two weeks, Alcohol consumption was positively related to the use of Ritalin, a prescribed drug. The respondent gender and race were elaborately associated with the use of the Ritalin drug in the past one year and the past one month. The participants class standing was also significantly associated with the past one month and the past one year use of the Ritalin drug. The college senior reported the lowest use of the Ritalin as compared to college sophomore and freshmen were much likely to report more to the Ritalin use. The smokers and the individuals experimenting with tobacco reported the significant use of the Ritalin in the past one year and the past one month. The past one month and the past one year use of illegal drugs and one or more related prescription drugs also showed the significant use of Ritalin. Presentation Ritalin is the most widely used drug in the prescribed stimulant medication for ADHD. Good proportions in number of college students in the United States are prescribed the drug. Similar number of the students has reported to be diverting the drug, Ritalin for selling, sharing or giving it away. The study focused on the risk factors associated with the use of nonprescribed Ritalin. As the findings have shown, there is the high rate of Ritalin use by the students at the college level with the figures declining with the level of seniority. The respondents reported the high rate of Ritalin use in the past one year and the past one month. Compared with the national figures of the Ritalin use, the percentage was high in the South California University where the research was conducted. This could be attributed to the overrepresentation of students who use the substance. Whether the overall population estimates of the Ritalin are anomalous, the main focus of the study was to examine the co rrelation of the Ritalin use as opposed to documenting the population estimates. The findings represented the facts as other college research on use of prescription stimulants. Other research has found the positive association between the Ritalin use and the use of other drugs. The students with lower GPAs are more likely to use Ritalin. The research also revealed that both the experimental smokers and the regular smokers were more likely to report the use of Ritalin in the past one year and the past one month as compared to nonsmokers. The experimenters in the smoking scene had the great likelihood of reporting the Ritalin use iin the past one month relative to nonsmokers One may then speculate that the effects of nicotine in the cigarette functions the same as the Ritalin. Perhaps they used the same drugs to cope with the academic stress and other related factors. Students who belonged to a fraternity or sorority reported the high rate of Ritalin use; a member was more likely to report seven times the use of Ritalin compared to nonmember. Again the sorority members were more likely to report seven times higher the presence of Ritalin in the past one month as compared to the nonmember. The study also focused on the relationships and the use of Ritalin. Those in the relationship reported past one year use of Ritalin and past one month use of the Ritalin drug whether the relationship was protective or non protective. Ritalin ADHD and children ADHD affects many children in the United States three to five percent of children suffer from ADHD. When looking at the long term consequences of ADHD, one third to one half of the children will outgrow their behavior. In many children, the symptoms of ADHD especially hyperactivity decrease with time, impulsivity may persist till adulthood. The diagnostic and treatment of the disorder has been empirical with no objective confirmation to date from the laboratory measures. The ADHD diagnostic should focus on the three major factors like impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattention based on the childs family history, physical examination and the developmental and the psychological evaluation. Other diagnostic measures may look at the childs chronic fear to mild seizure making the child to be overactive, quarrelsome, over reactive and not attentive. Repeated middle ear complication also makes the child appear withdrawn and non cooperative. When it comes to the treatment of the ADHD, counselors elaborate physical education, psychology education, physiological education and family appraisal must be done to avoid misdiagnosis. Management must also involve the equal treatment plan of pharmacological procedures together with the behavioral shifting therapies. Ecological management and educational ways that could help the individuals suffering from ADHD so that they can focus their work on their self esteem and operate in different ways. Multidisciplinary approach is also important in the treatment of ADHD. Parents, children and the school work together in order to formulate the educational methods suitable for the development of children suffering from the disorder. The developed academic goals and the activities must also incorporate the needs of the child with the problem. The current drug therapy that has been developed to cope with the ADHD disorder is the stimulant like methylphenidate (Ritalin). Additionally, patient s and their families are advised to seek group and individual and other integrated therapies for the suitable and the best therapy. The use of Ritalin is widespread and calls for further studies in order to develop targeted intervention plans. The use of the drug as a stimulant and as a therapeutic substance presents an array of complicated topics that must be analyzed in more detailed manner. The age factor and the complications caused by the ADHD and the use of Ritalin as reported by respondents in the study showed that the drug is not only used to treat the disorder but also as a stimulant for various purposes. When the respondents reported to have used the Ritalin both consciously and unconsciously, having sold it out to other students or given it out freely is also another topic of discussion. The use of the drug and other related functions as in the complications that the drug could help the victims to overcome like poor performances in class work, the use of the drug together with other substances like alcohol, nonprescriptive substances, tobacco and cigarette also showed that the drug is a stimulant like any other drug consumed by individuals to feel high, become intoxicated ant to feel relieved from the problems of the world. Conclusion ADHD is a disorder affecting children mostly but the condition may be carried to adulthood if not properly diagnosed and proper therapeutic measure taken to treat the complication. The best therapeutic measure to be taken when dealing with the complication is all encompassing thereby involving both the stakeholders from the parents of the individuals suffering from the disorder to the teachers at the school where these individuals learn and society as a whole. The currently used drug for the treatment of ADHD is called Ritalin. The drug has been abused by individuals to whom it is prescribed; they give it away to their colleagues either by selling it, giving it out freely. The drug is mostly abused in High schools by the students; the statistics show that the ages of drug user in the high schools decreases with age and seniority as sophomores and the freshmen reported to be using the Ritalin more than the seniors.
